Role Summary:
GridStor is seeking a Portfolio Manager, Power Markets to own the commercial performance of our operating battery energy storage fleet. This role sits at the nexus between market execution, settlements, and asset performance: ensuring our assets are scheduled and optimized effectively, our revenues are measured and reconciled accurately, and our hedges and bilateral positions are implemented and tracked correctly.
The successful candidate will manage execution and optimization of a defined portfolio, coordinating with third-party optimization, our QSE/scheduling counterparties, and internal Operations and Asset Management teams, while building the settlements, performance measurement, and hedge-tracking infrastructure that a growing commercial platform requires. As GridStor’s footprint and market participation mature, the candidate will help develop and enable the company’s hedging capability, from cash and prompt products through term horizons of up to two years. The role works daily alongside our forecasting, risk, structuring and data teams within the Commercial organization.
Must be Central Time-located, preferably Houston or Chicago. Expected time allocation is approximately 40% trading and markets, 20% performance measurement, 20% pricing and structuring, 10% operations coordination, and 10% other commercial support.
Key Responsibilities:
Trading & Markets
Company Operating Principles:
GridStor’s Operating Principles represent who we are, how we work, and what we believe.
We Collaborate. We believe trust is given, not earned. We honor each other’s zone of genius and seek to challenge ideas, not each other. We listen to each other’s points of view and work hard to find the better solution. We are one team.
We Are Humble. We like hard work, but don’t make work hard. We know we have a lot to learn and never grandstand or take up all the space in the room. We are kind. We are welcoming. We are inspired by our mission to decarbonize the grid.
We Create the Future. We are curious. We go deep, search for the best idea, and then move fast. We always focus on the few things that matter most. We know there will be setbacks, so we show up every day ready to learn and be better, together.
We Show Up for Each Other. We keep each other fully informed. We seek to understand. We coach, we don’t blame. We share our points of view and seek to make each other better every day. We believe everyone creates culture in every moment, every day.
We Do Hard Things. We view challenges as opportunities. We are resilient. We are all owners, and we act like it. We understand change requires taking risks and we push ourselves and our partners. We do what is right as opposed to what might be best for any one of us.

Key Responsibilities:
Trading & Markets
- Facilitate daily Day-Ahead, Real-Time, and Ancillary Services market participation for the operating fleet in CAISO and ERCOT, in coordination with third-party optimization platforms, QSE/scheduling entities, and internal forecasts.
- Help develop and enable hedging strategies for the portfolio as markets and capabilities mature, from cash and balance-of-month products out to two-year term horizons, consistent with company risk policies.
- Implement, track, and maintain hedges and bilateral structures in our systems of record, ensuring positions, terms, and exposures are represented accurately.
- Monitor market fundamentals, ISO rule changes, and BESS participation model developments (e.g., real-time co-optimization) and assess commercial impact to the fleet.
- Recommend refinements to bidding parameters and operating strategies based on observed performance, market design knowledge, and BESS technology constraints.
- Establish and maintain the fleet’s commercial performance measurement process: realized revenue vs. forecast, performance vs. third-party optimizer benchmarks, and variance attribution.
- Deliver recurring performance reporting to Commercial, Asset Management, and leadership, and drive the continuous-improvement loop back into bidding and dispatch.
- Support Finance in revenue recognition, accrual accuracy, and month-end close for market activities.
- Support evaluation of new hedging, tolling, and bilateral opportunities with pricing analysis, settlement modeling, and exposure quantification, including structuring views on tenor, product, and venue.
- Coordinate hedge settlement mechanics, counterparty invoicing inputs, and delivery obligations with Finance and Mid-Office.
- Work with Analytics and the Risk Committee to improve risk metrics and the representation of assets and hedges in management systems.
- Support Business Development and Origination with views on ISO protocols, settlement mechanics, and commercial performance of the operating fleet.
- Manage award validation, outage tickets, and schedule adjustments in coordination with Operations, Asset Management, and Engineering, including asset maintenance scheduling.
- Establish communication protocols that minimize gaps between market commitments and asset dispatch/performance activities.
- Partner with Analytics and Data Engineering to automate settlements validation, performance reporting, and position tracking, building durable pipelines rather than one-off spreadsheets.
- Ad hoc analysis and cross-functional support as the commercial platform
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (advanced degrees, MS, MBA, preferred)
- Experience: 5+ years as a hedge trader, portfolio optimizer, or commercial asset manager for dispatchable assets (battery storage, gas generation), with direct experience in at least two of WECC/CAISO/ERCOT/SPP/PJM. Day-to-day focus will be CAISO and ERCOT.
- Demonstrated fluency across cash, Day-Ahead/Real-Time, ancillary services, balance-of-month, and term products out to approximately two years, and how each settles.
- Working knowledge of ISO settlement processes, charge codes, and market timelines; hands-on shadow settlement experience strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with hedge structures common to storage and dispatchable generation (fixed-price swaps, tolls, revenue puts, heat-rate structures, bilateral PPAs) and how they are implemented and tracked.
- Strong analytical and modeling capability is essential. The role is supported by significant quantitative and data infrastructure; the successful candidate must be able to run, adapt, and interrogate code-based analyses and data queries independently (e.g., Python, SQL, or comparable tools), even if not writing production software.
- Understanding of BESS operating constraints and their commercial implications (state of charge, cycling, degradation, ancillary service obligations).
- Location & Availability: Preference for central US, such as Houston or Chicago.
- Organizational Skills: Exceptional organizational abilities with keen attention to detail. Capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment and seeing delegated projects through to completion.
- Adaptability: Ability to be agile and flexible, readily taking on tasks outside the typical scope of the role as needed.
- Confidentiality: Proven ability to handle highly confidential information with utmost discretion.
- Integrity & Judgment: Strong track record of excellent judgment and integrity in previous roles.
- Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite and TEAMS.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work effectively with cross-functional stakeholders across Commercial, Operations, and Finance.
- Problem-Solving: Adaptable, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively and approach challenges with a creative, proactive mindset.
- Team Orientation: Highly motivated to support and collaborate with team members, contributing to collective success.
- GridStor offers an attractive Total Rewards package, including:
- Competitive base salaries commensurate with experience with an annual cash bonus (based on Company and individual performance)
- Generous paid leave
- Employee participation in Long Term Incentive Plan
- Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, including coverage for domestic partners and eligible domestic partner children
- HSA/FSA for participating employees
- 401(k) plan with company match and immediate vesting
- Continuing education and professional development
- Cellphone reimbursement, hybrid work environment, healthy snacks, volunteer opportunities, company outings, and more.
